With spring in the air and the warm sun hitting our faces we look forward to the events of April in and around the Bordeaux region.

The markets will be full of flowers in bloom and seeds ready for planting as well as the usual fair of local cheeses, wines and of course foie gras. The mornings may still have a nip in the air but by 10:00 or 11:00 the market square should be warm enough to sit and enjoy a coffee as you watch the goings on and the world go by...

Bordeaux Book Fair

One for the book worms, the month of April begins with the Bordeaux Book Fair, or L'Escale du Livre as it is officially known. Showcasing over 150 authors, there will be debates, lectures, meetings, exhibitions, workshops, performances and shows across the weekend.

Come meet Irvine Welsh on Saturday 1 April at Cinéma UTOPIA Bordeaux for the screening of Trainspotting 2 and during his big interview at 14 pm at the Escale du livre 2017.

Printemps des Vins de Blaye

The Spring Wine Fair in the citadel of Blaye is a real treat at the start of spring. Around 80 winegrowers from the appellation of Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux will be opening their doors...and their bottles...for visitors to come and taste their wines in a wonderful weekend atmosphere.​ There will be plenty to entertain the children as well!

A very special performance by the Russian National Opera will bring the classic and much-loved ballet of Swan Lake to life. The love story between Prince Siegfried and the Swan Princess Odette divided by the villainous sorcerer Rothbart in a story where true love conquers all. This ballet is full of wonderful music as well as stunning costumes and elegant ballet.

Easter weekend may be an energetic one for those who are taking part in the Marathon de Bordeaux. This night time marathon and half marathon will see the streets of Bordeaux closed to traffic as runners make their way out of the city and through some of the nearby vineyards of the region.

If you don't feel like running then make sure you are out to support those who are. The atmosphere is electric!

Tthe last weekend of April brings a festive atmosphere to the streets and vineyards of Saint Emilion as they host their annual Portes Ouvertes dans les Chateaux - doors open in the chateaux - as well as the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the barrel rollers of Lussac Saint-Emilion. A wonderful wine-filled weekend with history, culture and wine-tastings. Or if you prefer to run off those calories before you put them on then you might want to consider taking part in the Trail de Saint-Emilion - a beautiful trail running race through the stunning scenery of the vineyards of the region.
