French weather office, Météo-France, is predicting that a heatwave will hit France this week and last until at least Thursday in the Bordeaux area.

With temperatures set to be around 7 to 10 °C higher than seasonal norms there will be risk of severe heat and along with that, severe thunderstorms. The main areas of France to be affected are along the west coast and particularly in the south-west region of Bordeaux.

An official heatwave is defined as at least three consecutive days and three nights of high temperatures which can lead to health consequences, and where the minimum temperature does not drop below 20°C. August's longer nights mean that temperatures are more likely to dip below 20C after dark, reducing the risk of an official 'canicule' or heatwave. Bit it will certainly feel like one!

People are advised to take precautions and to keep cool during the day, avoid going out during the hottest part of the day and to drink plenty of water.
