Foreign Investment in Vineyards Across Bordeaux
47% of foreign investors in Bordeaux are Chinese
With the growing popularity of high end red wines in China it comes as no surprise that Chinese investment has increased dramatically in recent years.
In fact 2% of all French vineyards a are now in foreign hands, and China are topping the investors leader board. This represents just 500 properties and 12,000 hectares of the 600,000 available. But this 2% figure should be increased by at least 10%, due to the presence of foreign investors in complex collective montages.
In the Bordeaux region, no fewer than 194 areas are held by non-French owners, representing 5,278 hectares, or almost 5% of its vineyards. This is the French record. Provence comes second, with 62 areas for a smaller area of nearly 2,000 hectares.
At the moment Chinese investment is almost exclusively in Bordeaux, however, this could change over the next few years as they experience more of the French culture and wine. Provence, with its reputation for rose wine, would be a natural progression.
