If you are heading to Bordeaux this summer then you will be amongst some of the first to visit the Cité du Vin; Bordeaux's brand new and incredibly expensive wine city.

Costing around 80 million euros the Cité du Vin opened it's doors on 1st June 2016, after around ten years of planning and building. A mix of part museum, part theme-park and part architectural wonder, this new attraction is a place to eat, taste, drink and enjoy great wines from across the world.

Designed by architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières from Paris, the shape of the building mirrors how wine looks when it’s poured into a glass. Gold and silver metal plates cover the exterior and at eight stories high, it’s the tallest building in the city centre of Bordeaux. The heart of the building is a permanent technical installation by British designers Dinah Casson and Roger Mann.

According to CEO Philippe Massol, it’s “a place for the whole world of wine. We want young people, old people, people who know a lot about wine and people who just want to enjoy the building and the view,”

And after a tour round the museum, learning about wine, that is exactly what you can do. Head to the eighth-floor Belvedere viewing gallery to sample a glass of the good stuff while enjoying panoramic views of Bordeaux.

Admission to the exhibition is €20. Workshops, tutored tastings and vineyard tours start in July 2016.
