France' produces some 130,000 tonnes of oysters annually, of which most is harvested in the Bay of Arcachon, just 48km south west of the city of Bordeaux.

Long stretches of sandy shoreline are dotted with colourful oyster huts and boats, which, accompanied by the constant strains of seagulls' cries, create a landscape that can be both charming and stark. Considered by many to be France's plumpest and sweetest oysters they are best served with a delicious glass of white Bordeaux wine.

If you want to find out more about this prized delicacy, and specifically the history of oysters and oyster farming in the region, then a visit to the Maison de l'Huitre is a must. Situated in the town of Gujan-Mestras in the Bay of Arcachon the 'House of Oysters' is the perfect stop off....and you can even have a wee taste!
