At the start of the year the Los Angeles Times released their list of the top places to visit for 2017, which range from whole countries to cities, beaches and national parks. The city of Bordeaux is number one.

Bordeaux was selected by the American press publication due to being a UNESCO World Heritage site that is known for its food and wine, having expanded the number of attractions on offer in the city, and the cities diverse architecture.

With some wonderful examples of 18th-century buildings and wide boulevards, the city of Bordeaux has also now redeveloped its waterfront areas adding a more modern feel to the ancient city. Additional reasons cited for the accolade are the newly appointed Cite du Vin, a museum devoted to the history of wine which opened last year and the plans that are underway to connect the city with Paris via a high-speed train line.

Their top tip for 2017 - Avoid visiting from 18th to 21st June when the global wine-industry conference Vinexpo takes up many hotel rooms and boosts prices.
