State of emergency extended for summer of sports
France takes action to ensure public safety at national events
After the terror attacks in Paris on 13th November the government declared a 'state of emergency' which included banning public gatherings for a set period and tighter security measures at public events.
The 'state of emergency' has since been extended to include the major sporting events that are to take place this summer, namely Euro 2016 and Le Tour de France. The extension was approved by a large majority in the Senate yesterday by 309 votes to 30.
"The security challenges will be even more complex as we prepare to welcome a very large number of foreign visitors for Euro 2016," said Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.
The previous extension that was announced in February had been due to end on 26th May 2016 – but the heightened level of security will now continue until the end of July.
