Small town and seaside resort, half way up the west coast of the Médoc peninsula

featured in Towns & villages Updated

Part of the Médoc's Lakes which is made up of the municipalities of Lacanau, Carcans, and Hourtin.

One of the smaller seafront resorts along the coastline, with Lacanau being the largest, Hourtin Plage is an attractive and well maintained tourist destination.

The town of Hourtin itself is about 12km inland and is a quiet, pretty town with an open green space in the centre, near to the church. There is a purpose built cycle path that runs between the town and the coast so one can be easily accessed from the other.

History & Culture in Hourtin

Hourtin town is situated on the shores of the largest fresh water lake in France - Lac d'Hourtin. There is a nice sandy lake side beach here which is calmer than its sister beach on the Atlantic ocean and great for children to enjoy.

Beaches in Hourtin

In addition to the lake side beach the main Plage Hourtin on the Atlantic ocean is backed by low dunes and a beautiful forest area that is typical of the region. It is, as the others along this coast are, popular with surfers. With a strong undertow so caution should be taken if you are considering swimming here.
